What YAMLTools checks in your Helm file

  • Chart.yaml: apiVersion v2, name, version as SemVer, type and appVersion.
  • Dependencies with a name, a valid version range and a repository (https:// or oci://).
  • values.yaml: image tags written as numbers (1.20 is read as 1.2) and empty securityContext or resources blocks.
  • The output of helm template: paste it and it is detected and validated as Kubernetes manifests.
  • Templates with {{ }} actions are recognised as templates, so their syntax is not reported as broken YAML.

Risks it flags

  • Images on :latest or without a tag in values.
  • Empty securityContext in values, so containers keep the most permissive defaults.
  • Empty resources in values: no requests or limits by default.
  • Once rendered: privileged containers, running as root and plaintext secrets, with the Kubernetes rules.
  • Once rendered: workloads without probes or with a single replica.

Common Helm errors

The ones that break a deploy most often, and how YAMLTools reports them.

version is not SemVer

version: 1.4

Helm requires a SemVer 2 version such as 1.4.0. helm package fails before you even reach the cluster.

Dependency without repository

dependencies:
  - name: redis
    version: 19.6.4

helm dependency update does not know where to download it from. YAMLTools points to the dependency that needs one.

Validating a raw template

image: {{ .Values.image.repository }}

A template is not valid YAML until it is rendered. Render it with helm template and paste the output to validate the objects.
